A New, "Cohort-Based" Approach to Conservation

Ecosystem assessment in consumer electronics supply chains

Second Nature is working with Google and the sustainability platform TraceMark to understand ecosystem impacts across Google’s consumer electronics supply chain. As a strategic partner, we’re bringing a science-based approach to assessing ecosystems in Vietnam' s manufacturing hubs, helping to reveal new ways to integrate biodiversity into business decisions.

The pilot study – released in a November 2025 white paper – created an innovative framework to measure and manage ecosystem impacts in supply chains, blending cutting-edge geospatial analysis with deep local knowledge. The results were eye-opening: even heavily industrialized sites in Northern Vietnam harbored a surprising number of species that local communities value for environmental, economic, and cultural reasons. In other words, factory parks and supply hubs aren’t biodiversity deserts, and they can support nature in ways that matter.

This work shows that integrating biodiversity into supply-chain planning is both feasible and valuable – and provides an adaptable model which we’re now applying to other regions and industries.
