Designing for health and well-being at the neighborhood scale

Community Health Nature Program

Having completed the first extensive synthesis on the diverse health outcomes associated with biodiversity design actions, we are now able to guide innovative health-oriented design at multiple scales.

Second Nature is bringing this nature-driven community health approach into the master plan for a new community in California’s Central Valley. Using our deep and quantitative knowledge of health research, we developed a “community health nature program” that infuses the benefits of nature into the fundamental structure of the neighborhood, which is oriented towards lower-income, first-time homeowners. Elements include the size, location, and characteristics of parks; targeted distribution of canopy cover; strategically located greenways; water features; and other natural elements that are crucial for human health and well-being.

The health-nature dimension has become an integral component of the project, providing guidance and justification for these nature investments, and a key part of the value proposition for future residents.
